High Country Outfitters and Camp Wahoo operate under a Special Use Permit issued by the U. S. Forest Service, Dept. of Agriculture and is administered by the Cle Elum Ranger Station. The permit has recently been reissued for a 10 year period and encompasses an area from the Cle Elum River on the West, the Alpine Wilderness Boundary on the North across Blewitt Pass, Table Mountain, Liberty heading East to Ellensburg.
The site of our main camp, accessible by automobile, is located at 3800’ elevation at the headwaters of the North Fork of the beautiful Teanaway River in an area surrounded by numerous trail heads. These trails lead you into the pristine back country of the Wenatchee National Forest. This site was used by the Forest Service in the earlier days but turned over to High Country Outfitters in 1978. Check out the Green Trails, Mount Stuart map for a detail idea of our camp location and the surrounding trails.
The only way to reach the camp during the winter months is by snowmobile. The camp hosts 10’ to 12’ of snow during an average winter. Normally, we are able to start setting up camp each year on Memorial Weekend. The back country camps, however, are another story. It is always our hope to start packing them in for setup by the 4th of July, snow permitting. There have been times this has not been achievable.
The excitement of packing up the mules, heading down the newly exposed trail each season as the alpine lilies pop out of the ground keeps you coming back year after year. It is the time of year that you are more than likely to ride into a herd of elk cows and their new spring calves. We have learned to live in harmony with these majestic animals.
We also share this beautiful piece of the National Forest respectfully with deer, elk, porcupine, chipmunks, black bear (don’t worry, they are very shy), hawks, owls, stellar and Canadian jays, palliated woodpeckers, many variety of smaller birds, rainbow trout, but surprisingly not too many bugs. A raven moved into our base camp with us and spent the whole summer entertaining us mimicking the chatter and laughter of the kids, jumping up and down on our cars and trucks trying to get our attention and sitting up in a tree chattering above our heads while we were eating in our outdoor dining area. He also was a great horse back bareback rider and followed our groups down the trail as they left camp each day. He (or maybe she) greeted our wranglers each morning and ran up and down the corral railings as they fed the horses. We are anxious to see if this raven will return each year.
Our summer is spectacular and would like to invite you to come share our little haven with us. You can either take part in one of our programs or rent the camp for your group to enjoy. We have guest sleeping quarters for 50 people in our tent cabins complete with bunk beds and comfy mattresses. Our kitchen tent has all stainless steel surfaces, a grill, stoves, refrigerators and hot water tank all fueled by propane. We are known for our wonderful cooking all done in our treasured dutch ovens. All meals are served buffet style near our outdoor dining area nestled under the trees next to Eldorado Creek.
The evening campfire and star show completes this wonderful camp setting. For your convenience we have a shower tent complete with a standard shower stall where you can take a sun shower.
Check the Trading Post section of our website to take a look at our wonderful horses who work with us side by side and share this camp with us.
