Programs & Features

Horsemanship

The horsemanship program objectives are to experience adventure, develop horse handling skills while building lasting friendships and becoming a self confident horseman.
Safety - Your child's safety is our #1 concern
Safety rules in all aspects of horse handling and riding are stressed in the beginning as well as in all levels of the program. All horse contact is under the careful supervision of our experienced staff. Boots or hardsoled shoes with heels and helmets are required for riding.
    Handling
Introduction to leading, saddling, bridling and the basics of riding for those new to horses and our program, and a refresher for returning campers. Progression in handling through the four levels offered in the horsemanship program. Grooming and care of the horse assigned to each camper is also covered.
    Horseback Riding
Safety instruction, knot tying, practical trail riding experience and care of the animal on a ride. Campers will progress at their own speed at the Top Hand and Bronc levels. The skills taught are required to participate in the accelerated Wrangler and Adventurer programs.
    Packing and Pack Animals
Introduction to using a pack animal including care and handling on an overnight or pack trip. Wranglers and Adventurers will participate in the actual packing and leading of the pack horse or mule on their back-country outing.

Outdoor Living

Living in Harmony with Nature
Appreciation of the national forest, wildlife and their habitat, trees, wildflowers, mountain meadows, lakes and streams. Balance between nature and mankind is stressed. Camp Wahoo uses only low impact products in the everyday care of the camp, including recycling and composting to maintain our pristine environment, allowing us to live among the native wildlife such as mule deer, elk, chipmunks, marmots, mountain goats, grouse and various other varieties of birds. We teach "thrival" to our campers at Camp Wahoo, preparing them to thrive rather than survive as they are learning their outdoor living skills.
Outdoor Living and Cooking
While experiencing the simplicity of our beautiful national forest setting, campers will become aware of the surrounding environment and their place and responsibility in relation to its care.
Campers learn skills through a variety of activities:
    - Practice the Forest Service's "low impact" camping skills
    - Read maps and use compasses
    - Build a shelter
    - Set up camp
    - Observe safety
    - Build a campfire
    - Dress for the outdoors
    - Assemble survival kits. Wranglers and Adventurers will prepare their own survival kits.
    - Prepare and Cook dinner on an overnight ride. Dutch oven cooking is introduced at camp and used in meal preparation on the trail. Wranglers and Adventurers plan, pack and prepare all their own meals on the trail.
    - Equipment care (Both programs teach the care and upkeep of the equipment used daily and on overnight trips).
